A domain name is the core of online identity. It is the address web surfers to find a web site. Your domain name is yours entirely because once registered, no other party may use that identity online in that Top Level Domain.
A top-level domain (TLD) is the suffix that is attached to the end of a domain name. For instance, in the domain name www.mycompany.com, ".com" is the TLD.
There are two types of top-level domains:global and country code. Global Top Level Domains (gTLD) were created to be used by the Internet public, while country code Top Level Domains (ccTLD) were created to be used by each individual country, as they deem necessary.

Domain Names always have 2 or more parts, separated by periods dots. The part on the left is the most specific and the part on the right is the most general Computers on the Internet use IP (Internet Protocol) numbers (e.g.123.456.78.90) to locate other computers. Internet users would have difficult time remembering these long strings of numbers to find sites, so Domain names were developed to translate IP numbers into easy to remember domain names.

Registration of Domain Name |
Only registrars accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) are authorized to register .com, .net and .org names in the registry. Some of these accredited registrars offer their services through resellers, which may provide assistance in completing the registration process. Your registration contract, however, will be with the accredited registrar and that registrar will maintain your contact information.
ICANN is the new non-profit corporation that is assuming responsibility from the U.S. Government for coordinating certain Internet technical functions, including the management of Internet domain name system.
